Current activities and research on the recovery and utilization of landfill gas in the Federal Republic of Germany (F.R.G.) are described. The Federal Ministry for Research and Technology (Bundesminister für Forschung und Technologie) has sponsored research at three landfill gas utilization projects. Over 100 gas recovery projects were proposed, planned or under construction in the F.R.G. in 1984. Special attention is being given to methods to increase gas production and gas collection. Corrosion of gas engines caused by HCl derived from chlorinated hydrocarbons has been a problem in some places.
