Abstract
This article describes the use of the Functional Assessment Inventory (FAI) with elderly clients receiving in-home services from a private, nonprofit agency in Tennessee. As part of an interdisciplinary research study, BSW students were trained to use the FAI. Following training, students conducted 118 in-home assessments. Problems and benefits of using student interviewers to examine functional health status are examined in addition to the role of the student interviewers on a multidisciplinary team. Implications for training, incorporation of learning principles, experiential exercises and screening of interviewers are discussed.
