Abstract
Composite plates stiffened with close-section stiffeners have been analysed for large deflection using the method of finite elements. The laminated plate has been modelled using eight noded isoparametric quadratic plate bending elements which include transverse shear deformation. Three noded isoparametric beam elements have been used to formulate the stiffener elements. The stiffener can be incorporated at any arbitrary direction within the plate element. The nonlinear equations of the static equilibrium assuming small rotation have been solved by the Newton-Raphson iteration technique. The composite stiffened plates with both the open and the closed type stiffeners have been analysed in the present investigation and the results have been compared with the published results to validate the present formulation.
