We have evaluated the surface damage of steel, aluminum, and chopped-glass-fiber composite panels subject to projectile impact. The comparison is made qualitatively as well as quantitatively in terms of the panel stiffness, the impact energy absorbed, the dent depth, and the damage area. The dent depth is a suitable parameter for char acterizing surface damage of metal panels only. The damage area is recommended for evaluating the surface damage resistance of composite panels.
