A study was made of the theoretical analysis, strength and fracture of the ferritic phase in dual phase steels, in which the martensitic phase has encapsulted islands. The importance of a knowledge of micro-cleavages of ferrite grains under a monotonic loading test has been assessed, not only in the study of the influence of plastic con straint but also in the theoretical analysis of the occurence of cleavage cracking on fer rite grains by plastic constraint.
