Abstract
Planar plate impact experiments of aramid fiber-reinforced plastics (AFRPs) have been carried out to determine its average shock Hugoniot and to examine response to shock compression using polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) stress gauges. The determined shock Hugoniot is Us 1/4 2.42up + 1.18, where Us is the shock velocity and up is the particle velocity. The output waveforms of the stress gauges reveal that the shock impedance of an aramid-fabric ply is lower than that of resin matrix and once the shock wave passes through, the aramid-fabric ply and the resin matrix have almost equal shock impedance.
