Abstract
This paper describes the analytical and experimental studies on bending strength of filament-wound (FW) composite pipes. Based on the maximum stress failure criterion, a theoretical approach was presented to predict the strength and failure mode of FW composite pipes. Four-point bending tests were performed for FW glass/vinyl ester pipes whose lay-ups were [± 30] s , [± 55] s and [± 70] s . The failure mode of filament-wound composite pipes depended on their winding angle. The theoretical prediction on both strength and failure modes agreed well with experimental results.
