A Dimensionless Mathematical Model for Studying the Physical Parameters of Composite Laminates

Abstract

In this article, a dimensionless mathematical model for studying the physical parameters of a quasi-isotropic composite laminate is presented. A simple random statistical analysis model showed that a quasi-isotropic and quasi-homogeneous composite laminate can be obtained from composite laminates with random ply orientations of 40 plies or more. The influence of the various lamina material properties E₁, E₂, G₁₂, and 12 on the physical parameters of the laminate such as Young’s modulus E, shear modulus G, Poisson’s Ratio, and bending rigidity D_b are studied. The results from this dimensionless mathematical model provide a set of general guidelines for designing the physical parameters of the composite laminates to fit various working conditions in engineering application.
