Abstract
Studies on the physical and mechanical properties of the different continuous fiber impregnated thermoplastic composite (COFIT) prepreg geometry such as width and thickness were carried out. The effect of using these different types of prepreg geometries in the making of a woven composite system were examined too. As a result of the pultrusion type prepregging system which is a prototype machine, three types of prepregs based on width and thickness can be classified. The correlation of the prepreg geometry with the end properties of these three prepreg systems was analyzed. It was found that the properties of the prepreg are governed by the geometry of the prepreg, which further influences the properties of the woven composite system.
