This paper reviews the restrictions placed on patients’ freedom of movement in non-psychiatric as well as psychiatric health care facilities and the methods used are outlined. Concern for the health and safety of the patient has always been the justification for steps taken by physicians that may be seen as restrictive. Modern realities necessitate that each psychiatric facility should develop specific policies and guidelines in the interests of patients and staff. Recommendations and suggestions for policy statements suitable for adult psychiatric units are described.
