Abstract
A double-blind crossover study was conducted to compare the effects of haloperidol with those of trifluoperazine in patients with Chronic schizophrenia of long duration. Both medications were administered to the patients following a drug-free and placebo period, initially and at the crossover. Tests of mental status were used to indicate changes produced by drag administration and included the BPRS, IMPS, MACC and the Rockland-Pollin scales. Results of the study indicate that the drugs both had a similar therapeutic effect and that the effect tended to be similar. Extrapyramidal side effects were observed in patients who received either haloperidol or trifluoperazine. One patient receiving haloperidol experienced epileptic seizures during the course of treatment. No significant abnormalities or trends toward such were seen in the battery of laboratory tests performed on each patient.
