This group was chosen initially to obtain a survey of the syndrome of childhood schizophrenia. The results of the survey suggested to the investigators that a group selected for rehabilitation should have:
1) An autistic illness without the presence of organic symptoms.
2) The potential for intellectual functioning within the average range.
3) Age below eight years.
4) An intact family group willing to have their child return to them.
5) Residence within reasonable geographic limits.
