Abstract
The introduction to this paper describes some of the features associated with the development of the duties of hangmen in Europe over the centuries.
The principal part of the paper is devoted to the history of the hangmen who practised their trade in French Canada, from its foundation up till the present Century.
In French Canada, as elsewhere, it was always difficult to find someone willing to become the hangman. In order to do so it was sometimes necessary to pardon a prisoner condemned to death on condition that he accept the office.
Three hundred years ago the hangman's duties included the execution of all forms of corporal punishment. Now his duties are restricted to one.
