The history, purpose, and mode of operation of the Massachusetts Court Clinics program is outlined. Also, discussed in some detail, are the methods of assessment of the offender used in this particular setting and factors which influence the prognosis as to the therapeutic potential of the individual involved. The importance of adequate control of the offender by means of skilled probation management is mentioned as a factor which makes treatment possible for certain offenders whose therapeutic potential would be otherwise nil.
