A survey has been carried out on 205 consecutive referrals to the Psychiatric Department of the Montreal General Hospital over the six months' period from July 1st to December 31st, 1961. This study is presented as a pilot project in an attempt to provide a framework whereby an analysis of the different roles of a Consultation Service can be examined and the methods of functioning of the service and its expanding requirements can be more accurately ascertained.
