A number of new grading systems for the mentally retarded were examined in terms of their potential contribution to diagnosis, prognosis and management. It was concluded that to continue grading the retarded into the traditional Idiot-Imbecile-Moron system was only apparently reactionary in view of the limited universality of the newer grading systems. Current substitute nomenclatures to date suffer from limited predictive potency and are probably little more than disguising euphemisms for a disability which is still essentially repugnant to large sections of the community.
