Abstract
People can classify objects in at least two different ways. One uses a visual way i.e. a comparison of objects by their appearance such as a pen is like a pencil because they resemble sticks. Another method is to classify objects by their function, thus a pen is like a pencil because they are used for communicating, etc. Other ways of classifying are possible.
The hypothesis was tested that schizophrenics tend to use visual classifications when ill. They administered a new card sorting test, the HOD test, to over 500 cases. The results of the experiment corroborated the ‘hypothesis. It was also found that subjects who had unidentified substances in their urine as measured by a specific paper chromatographic technique when compared to subjects who did not have it, also compared objects visually, rather than functionally.
