Abstract
In this article, we have tried to present some theoretical aspects of psychiatry” in Russia and other Eastern European countries. A consideration of the philo-sophical background reveals that the dialectical materialism which is prevalent in the U.S.S.R. is primarily responsible for the development of scientific thought in Russia. In reviewing soviet psychiatry, it was shown how it came to adopt the Pavlovian approach and what essentially constitutes this approach. Methods of experimental investigation and some clinical application were briefly considered. Finally, soviet thought on psychoanalysis and psychotherapy was outlined.
