This article explores the relationship between psychoanalysis and philosophy, through discussion of a recent book in which announced interpretation of Schreber's Memoirs is cross-articulated with Wittgenstein's analysis of philosophical solipsism. It shows how many of the `intellectual diseases' which preoccupied Wittgenstein have strong affinities with the symptoms described by Schreber and questions some basic assumptions which tend to be made within the psychoanalytic field.
