The theory of `figuration `formulated by Norbert Elias (1897-1990) is the basis of S.H. Foulkes's concept of group analysis and the group as network. The author assesses the importance of The Civilizing Process (Elias, 1939) and of the `critical theory' of the Frankfurt School with which they were both involved and discusses the application of group analysis to research and understanding in anthropology and other areas of social science.
