In the recent IQ controversy, most commentators have failed to question the concept of intelligence, of "its" nature. In a recent issue of this journal, Gonzalez correctly indi cates the anti-democratic nature of the idea of intelligence. However, Gonzalez is incorrect in stating that the concept of in telligence is tied to the growth of monopoly capitalism. Instead, the idea of "intelligence," little changed from the vague concept which exists today, can be shown to pre-date the development of capitalism by centuries.
