Abstract
Dependency theorists have been mired in a theoretical impasse since the mid-1980s because they cannot explain the economic achievements of the newly industrializing countries. In the information technology industry, a key sector in the knowledge-based economy, the high-tech industrialization and performance of India and Taiwan are particularly noteworthy. Ironically, however, the rise of knowledge makes these countries more dependent technologically.
