I am honored to introduce myself as the new Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Biological Markers (IJBM). I am an experimental oncologist at the Veneto Institute of Oncology IOV-IRCCS in Padua, Italy, and an associate professor at the University of Padua. With over 30 years’ experience in cancer research across Italy and Germany, my work has primarily focused on tumor angiogenesis, dormancy, and—more recently—liquid biopsy techniques for cancer detection and the monitoring of therapeutic and toxic effects of systemic therapies.
The IJBM is primarily focused on the application of cancer biomarkers in oncology and is dedicated to solid tumors in adult subjects. The clinical scenarios of interests are screening and early diagnosis of cancer, prognostic assessment, and prediction of the response to and monitoring of treatment. The journal is interested in the publication of studies aimed at validation of biomarkers for clinical application. It was founded in 1986 and has a very long story in the biomarker sector.
A significant portion of my research has been dedicated to biomarker discovery, particularly predictive biomarkers, which are essential for the success of precision oncology. My scientific background and deep interest in this field has made me eager to take on the role of Editor-in-Chief of IJBM, a journal that aligns closely with my research passions.
Cancer biomarkers have been a central topic in oncology for more than three decades, and the field has seen considerable evolution. While some biomarkers have waned in relevance, others remain at the forefront of research. As Editor-in-Chief, I will be committed to driving innovation within the journal, particularly by expanding our focus on big data analysis through advanced statistical methods and bioinformatics studies. The integration of mathematics, biology, and medicine is increasingly recognized as vital, and I believe IJBM should be at the forefront of this trend. I will actively encourage the submission of articles that explore these interdisciplinary themes and look forward to collaborating with all the Board members.
As the new Editor-in-Chief, I am committed to revitalizing the journal’s scientific scope by enhancing the Editorial Board with new subject area editors where needed and expanding our network of ad hoc reviewers to cover emerging fields. I look forward to collaborating with all of you and encourage the submission of your valuable research to IJBM.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank and send my very best personal regards to the former Editor-in-Chief of IJBM, Dr. Massimo Gion, for his excellent handling of the journal for the past 26 of its 38 years of life. He has decided—along with the Publisher staff—to pass the steering of the journal to me, giving me the opportunity of preserving the focus of the IJBM while innovating the range of markers of interest. Sincerely, Stefano Indraccolo, M.D. Editor-in-Chief, The International Journal of Biological Markers
