Abstract
46 patients (24 male and 22 female; average age 51) were evaluated at our clinic from June ‘91 to December ‘96 for lithiasis in anomalous kidneys. 19 patients presented horse-shoe kidneys, 3 pelvic ectopic kidneys and 24 a duplex system. A Double-J stent was placed before treatment in 4 patients (9%); 5 subjects (10.8%) needed nephrostomy post-ESWL because of urinary obstruction determined by stein-strasse. 28 patients (60.9%) were stone-free after a single session of ESWL, while 11 (23.9%) presented clinically insignificant residual fragments. 2 patients (2.2%) did not show any sign of stone disintegration. ESWL may be used as primary treatment of urolithiasis in many anomalous kidneys without any associated obstruction that needs surgery.
