Abstract
The aim of this work is to verify the role of bladder wash cytology in negative endoscopic controls. We have evaluated 308 bladder wash cytologies retrospectively. 69 biopsies have been analysed and 51 of these have also been studied with flow cytometry. Bladder wash cytology was negative in 223 cases, positive in 25, uncertain in 52 and in 8 cases the analysis could not be evaluated. This study demonstrates that bladder wash cytology shows a good correlation with histological examination and endoscopy. It is particularly interesting to note that when cystoscopy is negative, the probability of the cytological examination being positive is very low (2%); this probability is totally annulled when indication for endoscopic control is represented by irritative disturbances.
