Abstract
We report our experience in using intravesical lidocaine for local anesthesia in 14 patients aged between 70 and 89 years (mean 76), undergoing bladder mapping and/or electrofulguration of small papillomas. In 10 cases the papillomas were less than 1 cm in diameter, while in 4 cases bladder mapping was carried out. 50 ml of 2% lidocaine were left in the bladder for 7-10 minutes. 10 patients tolerated the procedure well, 3 complained of slight suprapubic pain, while 1 had such intense pain that the same lidocaine had to instilled into the bladder submucosa in the area of the operation. Serum levels of lidocaine measured at 10-20-30 minutes were clinically insignificant. There were no cardiac arrythmias or significant variations in pressure during the operations.
