A Protamine-Coated Device for the Control of Heparin Anticoagulation

Extracorporeal therapy is currently employed in kidney dialysis, open heart operations, blood oxygenation, plasmapheresis, and organ transplantation. Assessment made from the US Renal Data Report (2) suggests that in 1990 more than 13 million dialysis treatments have taken place. Results from the National Health Survey (3) reveals that more than 1 million open heart operations have been performed in 1985, the last year for which these data are available. The other applications consist of about another 1 million procedures (4). Altogether, it is estimated that in the United States alone more than 15 million extracorporeal therapies are performed each year.
