Using data on peasant family roles in the Tokugawa period, this
article examines patterns in the assumption of and withdrawal from family roles and
analyzes the interactional characteristics of these dynamics in the course of the family
life. A critical methodological issue is the synchronization of the transitions of all
family members and the understanding of the transitions in the collective family cycle.
