This article on Kilmarnock marriage patterns deals, with levels of
occupational endogamy at marriage among different sections of the society of the
parish of Kilmarnock in Ayrshire during the eighteenth century. It is aimed at the
current debate on the social implications of proto-industrialization, and questions
certain assumptions in the theories of Medick and others about the novel
importance of joint contributions to family budgets.
