Berne and subsequent transactional analysts, with the exception of James (1973, 1981b), have paid little attention to spirituality in human development and therapeutic practice. However, spirituality, religion, and the search for meaning figure significantly in the lives of many persons in diverse cultures. Families serve as the prisms through which social influences and unique identities converge in the evolution of spirituality and religious expression. This article describes the use of spirituality-focused genograms to illustrate the interconnecting of spiritual strivings, personal choices, family contexts, and multigenerational processes from a transactional analytic perspective.
