This article considers the differences between self, role, and ego states. Transactional analysis discusses relationships in terms of ego states, transactions, life positions, and so on. Relationships also involve task- or social status-oriented roles. The ways that role interactions may interfere with useful ego-state transactions is discussed, and then suggestions are made for how to bring role expectations and ego-state transactions into harmony.
