Developmentally the growth of self is inextricably intertwined with social processes. Thus therapy with individuals involves the experiences of relationships and contexts. Because transactional analysis and family-systems approaches both address social-psychological issues, their integration forms a more comprehensive framework for the treatment of individuals. R. D. Laing and G. H. Mead provide conceptual bridges for a synthesis joining an emphasis on the development of self in systems with an elucidation of the social-psychological dimensions of ego states, relationship analyses, scripting, and group imagoes. A case example illustrates the integrative approach, and guidelines for applying this perspective are discussed.
