Using Kaplan's (1988) Individuation-Attachment Questionnaire, the fear of individuation and the fear of attachment were both found to be associated with depression. Depressed individuals fear getting involved with others and differentiating themselves from others, suggesting that they prefer to remain dependently involved with familiar figures.
