A simplified form of TA theory is suggested for application to social work situations. Specifically, the theory of injunctions and associated permissions may be used in making an appropriate choice of parents for a child needing permanent placement in a new family. A case study shows the way in which the emotional needs of the child are likely to “match” the emotional strengths of the caregivers and thus lead to the healthy development of the child, the new parents, and the new relationship. An action plan to assist this process is outlined.
