Intuition of the Possible and the Transactional Creation of Realities

Abstract

The origins of TA, especially Berne's considerations on the use of intuition in professional diagnosis, are discussed and expanded. The author suggests a clear separation between structural and functional aspects of the basic definitions of TA concepts and more universal categories that are applicable to fields other than psychotherapy. As major steps in the future development of TA, several ideas are proposed: understanding TA as an experimental approach; the inclusion of intuition of the possible and valuing; the further development of a professional vocabulary; and understanding TA as a professional approach to creating reality. Finally, based on the idea of TA as a professional identity, definitions are offered for transactions, transactional analysis, transactional analysts, and TA associations.
