Reparenting Strategies in Transactional Analysis Therapy: A Comparison of Five Methods

Abstract

A number of transactional analysis approaches to reparenting as a therapeutic technique have arisen in the last twenty years. Although all of them are directed toward providing the client with new Parent messages to take the place of inadequate or unhealthy messages received in childhood, these methods vary considerably. This study compares five reparenting approaches, including variations in regression procedures, primary agency of reparenting, and desired changes in the client's Parent ego state. The development of empirical evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of these approaches is encouraged.
