Some allergic symptoms are associated with an attitude of fear and powerlessness in the presence of the allergenic substance. When the fear is systematically desensitized, a sense of power over the feared object or substance increases and the allergic reactions decrease. A case history provides the framework for discussion of the underlying sense of powerlessness associated with specific allergic symptoms. A description of the imagery process used is included.
