Abstract
Proposes hope to exist in an authentic form (essence) and a script form (illusion). Hope as essence enlivens the self whereas hope as illusion attempts to secure against a catastrophic expectation. Utilizes a Gestalt-based cycle from Sensation and Awareness through Resolution and Outcome to describe the two forms. Analyses the treatment process and provides specific suggestions for appropriate therapeutic interventions and therapist modelling to enable the client to move from a sense of despair to the fulfillment of an autonomy contract.
