Abstract
Continuous decks provide a cost-effective solution compared with expansion joints in multi-span bridge construction. The part of the deck that spans over the open joint at intermediate supports is known as the link-slab. Although their length and magnitude are relatively small compared with the beams in the adjacent spans, link-slabs provide continuity to the structural system and influence the distribution of forces based on their stiffness and bridge support characteristics. This paper presents results from a test program that examines the behavior of bonded link-slabs connecting adjacent reinforced concrete beams and derives closed-form solutions to predict shear forces and moments. Validity of the solution is verified based on comparisons with test data and its applicability for bridges in the medium-span length range is illustrated by a numerical example.
