Periosteal acupuncture is more effective than ordinary acupuncture in several conditions:
The appropriate transverse, cervical process may be needled in patients with headache, migraine, cervical spondylosis, interscapula pain, etc.
The area of the sacro-iliac joint may be needled in low backache, sciatica without neurological deficit, testicular pain, etc.
The coracoid process may be needled in a painful shoulder.
The medial condyl of the tibia may be needled in patients who have pain in the knee, with not too much pathology.
The neck of the femur may be needled in patients with pain in the hip joint, when there are minimal changes on x-ray.
The lateral side of the posterior spine of the lower lumbar vertebrae may be needled in those patients where needling the region of the sacro-iliac joint is ineffective.
