BITNET: a primarily academic network that covers more than 30 countries and offers electronic mail and file transfer. Currently it is part of the Corporation for Research and Education Networking (CREN). UUCP originated from the Unix to Unix Copy Protocol that permits functions similar to BITNET via telephone lines. These two networks provide gateways to the Internet.
