Ding Zhi-gang, Deputy Director of the National Library of Peking, and Liang Sizhuang, Deputy Librarian of Beying University were the first librarians of the Peoples Republic of China to attend an IFLA General Conference.

Austin, professor at the University of Hawaii, received the International Reading Association's prestigious International Citation of Merit for her contributions to developmental reading, evaluation and diagnosis, remedial instruction and further work for the development of children's literature.

George Chandlerretired on July 1 as Director-General of the National Library of Australia. He is succeeded by Harrison Bryan, former Librarian of the University of Sydney .

Lord Snow, the well-known British author who spoke at IFLA's 50th jubilee (1977), died on 1 July, aged 74. Charles Percy Snow was the last of the lay-Presidents of the British Library Association (1961). He was a great defender of the public lending right.

Dr. Ricardo Gietz, Director of CAICYT (Centro Argentina de Información Cientifica y Technólogia) and CONICET (Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Tecnicas) Buenos Aires, Argentina was elected to the presidency of FID during the International Congress held in Copenhagen in August, 1980.
