Derek Austin (British Library's Bibliographic Services Division) has been rewarded the Margaret Mann Citation for 1978. Mr. Austin received the award from the American Library Association for his significant contribution to the establishment of a new direction in subject analysis through the development of PRECIS (the Preserved Content Index System).

Shirley Echelman, former President of SLA and Chief Librarian of Chemical Bank in New York City, has been appointed Executive Director of the Medical Library Association.

Kalu Chima Okorie, Director of library services for the Imo State Library Board in Nigeria, has retired after 34 years of service to the public libraries of his country.

Chams Eldine El-Wakil of Egypt was elected Chairman of the Unesco Executive Board in November 1978, succeeding Leonard C.J. Martin (UK).

John A. Wolter has succeeded Walter W. Ristow (retired) as Chief of the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress (Washington, DC). Mr. Wolter will take part in the work of the IFLA Section of Geography and Map Libraries.

Jannice Monte-Mór, Director of the Brazilian National Library has left this position. Patricia Layzell Ward is appointed Director of the Library Management Research Unit at the Department of Library and Information Studies, Loughborough University, UK.

Dick (E.R.S.) Fifoot has been appointed Bodley's Librarian at Oxford as from 1 October 1979. Presently he holds the position of University Librarian, Edinburgh. Within IFLA he will continue to be the Chairman of the Professional Board up to and including the Copenhagen meeting.

Katherine M. Stokes received the 1979 Alumni Achievement Award of the Simmons College School of Library Science on May 18 in Boston. The award recognizes a superior level of accomplishment in the profession. Miss Stokes was the Conference Secretary for the IFLA Council meeting 1974 in Washington.

Melvin S. Day, Director of the US National Library of Medicine in Washington, has become the new Director of the National Technical Information Service at the US Department of Commerce.

Philomena Fayose has been awarded the Martinus Nijhoff Study Grant 1979. Ms. Fayose works at the Department of Library Studies, lbadan, Nigeria. Ms. Fayose will study childrens literature and the reading habits of children in the Fed. Rep. of Germany, Austria and the Netherlands.
