This early-stage screening could save authors valuable time and streamline the initial evaluation for journal editors. Furthermore, the future may see AI-powered systems identifying suitable reviewers for submitted manuscripts with greater accuracy and efficiency. By analyzing manuscript content and matching it with potential reviewers' expertise profiles, AI algorithms could expedite reviewer selection. This smart matchmaking not only accelerates the peer review timeline, but also ensures that manuscripts are evaluated by experts in the relevant subject matter. In the peer review process itself, AI tools may assist reviewers by providing relevant references and suggesting potential issues or areas for further evaluation. This augmentation of human expertise with AI-driven insights could elevate the quality of peer reviews. The realization of this vision may be on the horizon, with AI refining its capacity to provide valuable insights to reviewers. Beyond peer review, the future holds the promise of AI streamlining various editorial tasks, such as manuscript tracking, plagiarism detection and even language editing. Automated systems may assist journal editors in managing submissions, tracking manuscript progress and ensuring adherence to ethical guidelines more effectively. Although AI-powered plagiarism detection and language editing are still evolving, they offer a glimpse into how technology can enhance editorial efficiency. However, it is crucial to underscore that these potential applications of AI are not a replacement for human judgment and expertise. Rather, they represent a horizon of possibilities that require further exploration and development. AI serves as a promising assistant, capable of alleviating administrative burdens and providing valuable insights, but human oversight remains essential to uphold the quality and integrity of the publication process.
