Abstract

In football and science, we are facing the same problem: How to build the next team and the next generation. Headache research will only survive if we keep encouraging the brightest and most dedicated young researchers to pursue the field of headache medicine. The IHS has long accepted this challenge, having provided for many years a vast array of headache schools, junior programs, master programs, travel grants, and fellowships. Cephalalgia implemented an editor trainee program last year to give dedicated scientists the opportunity to learn from the more seasoned and experienced Associate Editors. These Junior Editors proved to be highly dedicated and true experts in their fields, with their thoughtful comments and balanced review of submitted manuscripts. Their input is exceptionally valuable for Cephalalgia.
In this issue of Cephalalgia, we have a new concise review article from the Junior Editors. They discuss and highlight the most relevant research done last year in the headache field. Not restricted to Cephalalgia’s content, the “Junior’s Choice” is a timely narrative review of what they believe to have made, or will make, the largest impact on the field. The task was to select and explore what is new in headache research, and as such is certainly and most importantly a very personal view from the authors. From the standpoint of 2017, the year 2016 was very fruitful and exciting for headache research, which gives rise to optimism for the years to come.
As Peter Goadsby once stated, “the future for headache research is bright”. And I add, “due to our next generation of headache researchers”.
