The paper attempts to ascertain the influence of the factors responsible for changes in betting turnover on the various forms of racing (gallops, trots and dogs) considered as a whole. Since a proportion of betting turnover is channelled back to state governments as well as the various racing clubs, knowledge of the nature of such influences is not only important for the welfare of the racing industry itself, but also from the point of view of state government revenue. The study is conducted on a state by state basis for the five largest states in the Commonwealth, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia, and also for Australia as a whole.
