Abstract
Through the lens of systems theory, this paper examines contemporary research practices in the academic field of finance. The aim is to establish a benchmark for the ‘state of the field’ in the early 21st century in order to stimulate thinking and challenge the field to open debate about current research practices: what they are, what maintains them, and how they might evolve.
