This brief review attempts to summarise important basic concepts of sodium metabolism including sodium ion distribution, sodium balance and the renal regulation of sodium excretion. Finally, an attempt has been made to relate these basic concepts to the mechanisms and management of common clinical situations of abnormal salt balance.
