Psychiatric aspects of drug overdose in adult suicide and suicide attempts are reviewed. Particular reference is given to studies reported from Australia. The findings of a recent study from the Royal Melbourne Hospital with regard to age-sex distribution, drugs used in self-poisonings, clinical state of the patient on admission and psychiatric diagnosis are presented and discussed.
