A child aged 13 months suffering from epidermolysis bullosa developed an upper oesophageal stricture. This required oesophagoscopy and dilatation. Anaesthesia was induced using oxygen and halothane, blown initially over the face, and then into a modified head box. Tracheal intubation was carried out using a P.V.C. tube without the aid of muscle relaxants.
